While George Cawston’s three brothers where born in Cawston, BC, George was born in Perth Ontario. His father is listed as “stock raiser” in the Williams' Illustrated Official British Columbia Directory, 1892.


In 1914 George declares himself a horse packer when he enlists with the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles (BC Horse). His brother Alfred also enlisted but not until 1917.




Last week has been for Keremeos one of pride and joy and yet almost every day has brought a special sorrow. Eight men went up to Penticton a few days ago to undergo examination as recruits for the BC Horse, passed the test in A1 fashion and Cargill Armstrong and Lyall Beckett went on to Vernon at once. On Thursday Lorne Coleman, Beach Cawston and Ross Fleming took their departure….
