Lcp. William Hugh Henderson (1879-1916)

Born in Nova Scotia in 1879, William was one of 9 children born to Murdoch and Rachel Henderson. Although William was a resident of Hedley at the time of the first World War, he is not listed on the Cenotaph. William had moved around a bit before moving “up top” on the Nickel Plate Mine town site and was employed as a machinist. His first attempt to enlist but was unsuccessful perhaps due to blood poisoning the year before4. He was able to enlist at Grand Forks in 1916 and continued on to training in Vancouver with the 102nd Battalion.  His sister, Mrs. Margaret Robertson also a resident of Hedley, lost both her brother William and son Bobby Robertson to fighting during the first World War, just months apart. Their brother Frank Leighton Henderson also served overseas but came home safely.
