Born in Barnstaple, England, Sid emigrated to Acton, Massachusetts with his parents in 1883. He graduated from Winchester High School in 1897 and later the Burdette Business College in Boston. Following that he worked at the AC Lawrence Leather Co of Boston for a few years. He left in 1906 and by 1914 he was working as a Quartz Millman at the Hedley Mines. A very popular fellow, Sid was written up regularly in the Hedley Gazette.
