Born in Ontanabee, Ontario, William was the youngest son of Thomas & Margaret Hope. We don’t know very many details about William before he came to BC other than his family farmed in Ontanabee.

William Hope was a Customs (Preventative) Officer2 in Keremeos when he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in November of 1914. His letters home were upbeat and positive and others remarked on his famous laugh3.

Notes:

… I think old Canada is doing fine, don’t you? Since coming back we have had it very easy so far it bring very quiet along our line. We were out for a few days rest and had quite a time as most every regiment around has a baseball team so we had some real good games also of football. Then in the evenings, sometimes we would have a big bonfire and have a concert…
