Pte. Rodrick D. “Rod” MacDougall (1891-1916)
Rod MacDougall started life in Nova Scotia. He came from a large family and at least one of his brothers, William, joined him in Hedley. Perhaps his brother John as well.
Rod worked as a millman with the Hedley Gold Mining Co. before enlisting with the 54th Battalion. His brother John Archibald MacDougall was conscripted into the 1st Depot, Nova Scotia Regiment in 1918. Rod’s youngest brother Collin served during the Second World War as he was 14 years his junior.
He is described as “tall and strong, he also was endowed with that quality of self-confidence that goes with fine physical development”.
