Flanders must have been a splendid country before the war, very flat and an ideal farming country. Have never seen such splendid crops as are around here, but everything appears to be done by hand, very little machinery used. Farming is carried on to within a mile or so of the firing line. The hard-working peasants seem to pay little or no attention to the conflict waging so close to them.

Cpl. Arthur Percy “Doc” Martin (1888-1917)
Doc Martin was one of five children born to Charles & Florence Martin in SE London. His father was a “licensed victualler”, a publican.
Doc emigrated to Canada in 1906 and worked in Vancouver as a labourer. By 1915 he was a miner at Hedley.
