Pte. Bertram “Bert” Augustus Schubert (1892-1916)
Born in Victoria, BC , Bert’s mother passed away when he was quite young. He moved to live with his grandparents in Armstrong, BC while his father, James, opened a mercantile store in Penticton.
Bert moved to Hedley to be with his father and new step-mother about 1902. The family moved to Tulameen, BC to construct a store but Bert stayed behind to work at the Hedley store, when the name changed from Schubert Merchandise to the Hedley Trading Co which operated out of what is the present-day Hitching Post Restaurant building.
In 1915 Bert enlisted into the 54th Battalion and was killed at the Somme in 1916.
